Hospice funding is an ongoing concern as no government grants or funding is received. Every hospice is autonomous in terms of fundraising.

Charity shops: In order to ensure long-term sustainability, we have nine established charity shops and a bookshop in the Ekurhuleni area. These shops bring in a substantial contribution to our annual budget requirements.

Donation of goods for resale is an invaluable way of helping the hospice to maintain its high standard of care. These shops form the backbone of the continuous income required.

Any good quality items are gratefully accepted.
Pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, linen, curtains, mens, ladies and childrens clothing, furniture, electrical items (in working order), ornaments, bric-a-brac and what have you.
Books, DVDs and CDs for the bookshop.

Goods can be delivered to the nearest shop. If this is not possible please contact hospice on 011 422 1531 to arrange collection.

Shop volunteers: We are always in need of volunteers to assist the shop managers. If you can spare about four hours once a week to help us it would be very much appreciated. Kindly contact Joan Bolton, our Volunteer Coordinator, on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning on 011 422 1531.

Hospice East Rand is a community-based organisation whose mission is to provide high quality holistic and non-discriminatory care for the terminally ill and their families, irrespective of their ability to pay. (Mission Statement).

?Hospice isn?t about how you die, it?s about how you live?.
J. Donald Schumacher, President and CEO of National Hospice and Palliative Care Organisation.

Hospice East Rand offers:

Palliative care to patients diagnosed with a terminal illness, mainly cancer and HIV/Aids.

Emotional support to patients and their families.

Education and training in Palliative care.

Patients requiring hospice care may approach the hospice themselves or a family member, doctor, social worker or other appropriate person may do so on their behalf. For full information on the intake procedure kindly read "How to access hospice care and place a patient on the hospice programme".

The Hospice of the Calumet Area in America has partnered with Hospice East Rand. This mutually beneficial relationship fosters intercultural learning between both hospices and creates resource mobilisation for the African programme.

Hospice East Rand History
Hospice East Rand was founded in Benoni in 1986. In 1987 a little house in Ampthill Avenue was purchased, renovated and utilised as a centre. The organisation bought the current property at 218 Kemston Avenue in 1988 and the necessary additions and alterations were made. The centre was used for training courses, fundraising, administration and a day care centre for ambulant patients. In 1990 an additional property (directly behind the main property in Victoria Avenue) was purchased and in 1995 this house was renovated into a five bed In Patient Unit. In 1998 with the invaluable financial assistance of the Timken foundation and Murray & Roberts, a five bed (single room) Frail Care Centre was added. A property was purchased in Vosloorus in 2006 and renovated to house the Vosloorus Day Care Centre expansion project.
